A key design feature of Barwon Water HQ was to reuse the original building structure, saving more than 1 million kilograms of CO2 (equivalent) through minimising the use of new construction materials. In addition to this more than 80% of material removed from the site during demolition was recycled.
The building’s newly-tailored facade responds to site specific environmental conditions and is instrumental in achieving the project’s 5-star Green Star rating. The engineered diagrid aesthetic was developed using dynamic solar and thermal modelling and pays homage to Geelong’s industrial spirit, taking visual cues of patterning, repetition and articulation from the surrounding buildings.
The design allows the occupants to fully engage with Geelong’s Civic and Cultural Precinct by maximising daylight and key views, creating new connections within and through the building, while providing much needed additional floor space for enhanced staff amenities and working environments.
