GHD Woodhead’s multidisciplinary team was engaged by the Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia to design and deliver a new Starlight Room at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide. This is the first of four new rooms to be completed in hospitals around Australia.
With a focus on escape, GHD Woodhead created an ever-changing environment that is a departure from the rigours of hospital life by maintaining a sense of ‘another world’ for young patients.
The space is linked by an imaginary garden path with all zones visible from this meandering promenade; as children and their families wander through they view spaces which allow access to other worlds. Patients have the choice of raucous play using the latest technology in the gaming room, or quiet reflection and relaxation in the art room. The broadcast centre, the technical hub of the space, allows teenagers to explore and communicate with others wherever they may be in the world.
