Over time State Highway 1 had created a disconnection between the Orewa Town Centre and its greatest asset, Orewa Beach. The Orewa community therefore viewed the opening of the northern motorway extension as an opportunity. Without the presence of the motorway, Orewa, with its ‘villagestyle shops’ could become a destination rather than a thoroughfare. Rodney District Council’s vision was to ‘reconnect’ the town centre and the beach creating a boulevard with a unique character reflecting Orewa’s coastal town identity.
GHD’s Urban Design response was to balance the ‘place’ functions with the transport requirements of the street. This required a reattribution of space and therefore priority of pedestrians and local users over through traffic.
