The New Zealand Defence Force engaged GHD to design and construct a facility in which to accommodate the specific requirements of the Beechcraft flight simulator equipment.

The sheer size of the No. 1 Hangar, a heritage building located alongside the site, presented a challenge to the designers in terms of scale. Through their design response, a long, low form evolved.

Striking in its design, the building has an earth-like palette of complementary materials that suggest permanence and strength.  A cruciform layout has been chosen, helping to integrate the components of the facility. Functional areas, distributed along the central spine, are intersected by the entry corridor and internal link through to the Hangar.

The overall project included the refurbishment and fitout of the No. 1 Hangar, the adjacent Flightline Aircraft Shelter and associated hardstanding as well as the refurbishment of the Flight Operations Building.
