GHD Woodhead was engaged by Minda Incorporated to create the physical expression of the person-centred thinking of Minda and set the framework for a new socially integrated coastal community. Our ambition includes a high quality new urban form connected by a ribbon of inhabited landscape that links a clear hierarchy of public and semi-private spaces. This includes public access to connect the coast park and in doing so preserves one of the only primary and secondary sand dune ecosystems still intact in the region. The landscape has been enhanced with a multi-functional wetlands and semi-mature planting which add shelter, fragrance and colour.
The Brighton Dunes retirement living accommodation is in the northwest portion of the site near the beach and a short stroll to Glenelg via the Esplanade. It includes apartments, restaurants, and the potential for future commercial leasing opportunities allowing Minda to generate an income stream which in turn supports their core model of care for people with intellectual disabilities. The retirement living apartments maximise the aspect of the beachside location and the campus nature of the existing Minda facilities. The apartments are generous and have been conceived to be easily adapted for any progressive access requirements to help facilitate aging-in-place.
