In association with Athfield Architects Ltd, GHD was engaged to resolve the limitations of the existing library. Initial work included addressing the future strategy for the library to address the wider challenges in regard to changing inner city demographics, the streetscape and the relationship of the library to various stakeholders: including surrounding facilities such as the Auckland City Archives,
Auckland Art Gallery, AUT, Auckland University and various other education institutions.

GHD focused on the priority of achieving visibility and accessibility in the city while addressing a number of key concerns expressed by library users. The key element in this package of work is a prominent entrance to the library in the form of a lantern – a lofty glazed space that now occupies the former corner garden at the junction of Lorne and Wellesley Streets.
