One of Australia’s most celebrated architects Bob Nation AM has joined integrated design practice GHDWoodhead as National Design Director.

Having led major projects around the world for more than 45 years, Bob brings a commitment to design excellence, sustainability and high-quality project outcomes.

Currently, he consults as the Design Advisor to the Barangaroo Delivery Authority in Sydney, working with a team of international architects and other consultants on the redevelopment of a former industrial waterfront site into a globally acclaimed precinct.

“I join GHDWoodhead because of the opportunity to make a new mark on the culture and the design outcomes, especially on large-scale projects. The practice has achieved spectacular growth and my focus will be on further lifting its reputation for high-quality design, The nature of the business, our range of disciplines and our global reach enables GHDWoodhead to truly shape cities, and that is exciting,” Bob says.

GHDWoodhead has sustained steady growth since its inception in 2014, when the team from Australian architecture practice Woodhead joined GHD’s already substantial international architecture team. GHDWoodhead has now been ranked in the top three architecture practices in Australasia and #55 globally in the World Architecture 100 2018 survey.

Recently GHDWoodhead has designed a 65-storey residential tower in Sydney CBD integrated with the new Pitt Street South Metro Station and won the design competition for the new dedicated cruise terminal in Newcastle. The practice has also delivered a number of high profile buildings, workplaces and landscapes across Australia, including the Curtin University Medical School in Perth and Barwon Water Headquarters in Geelong, Victoria.

According to Bob, design excellence can be elusive to describe in words, but it is evident in the way “buildings manifest themselves and define the broader urban environment. Good design enriches the public domain, gives people joy, and is environmentally responsible.”

“Bob’s strengths include his thoughtful approach to the human experience in design and his understanding of the urban context both in Australia and globally. This aligns with our focus on helping clients deliver complex projects such as mixed use transit oriented developments, transport terminals, education and healthcare facilities. He will help us to continue to deliver great places as a canvas for community life,” says Michael Hegarty, GHDWoodhead National Practice Leader.

“Bob will focus on achieving consistency in our design processes as we grow and recruit to reinforce our design capability and experience. This is one of a series of appointments that we are making nationally to help create a platform for the next stage of growth of our business founded on high-quality design.”

Bob Nation is a past national president of the RAIA. He was previously the international design principal of RMJM in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Dubai and New York, the government architect for the Northern Territory and the founder of a number of architectural practices including Nation Fender Katsalidis. Bob will continue his involvement with the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, as a part-time Design Advisor.
